The specialist referred to a study by scientists from the University of South Carolina, which revealed more than six months of the persistence of traces of COVID-19 in the body of patients with leukemia. "Leukemia is a serious disease associated with impaired immunity, in the first place. In this disease, the virus is suspected as the initiator of this disease. It is possible that these viruses somehow interact with the coronavirus," Zhemchugov said. The immunologist recalled that in the fight against leukemia, toxic chemotherapy is used, and after bone marrow transplantation, patients are forced to take powerful immunosuppressants. He admitted that these factors can change the course of coronavirus infection. According to Zhemchugov, the only solution to the problem may be vaccination during the period of minimal damage from the treatment. According to the immunologist, only the attending physician can make a decision on the necessity of the procedure in each specific case.
