MOSCOW, January 26 - RIA Novosti. The recommendation to wear masks to women in labor applies only to women with COVID-19, and in each case the issue is resolved individually, said Leila Adamyan, chief obstetrician-gynecologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, a number of media outlets reported that the Ministry of Health, due to the coronavirus, ordered women to give birth in masks.
"Recommendations for wearing masks for women in childbirth apply to women in childbirth with a new coronavirus infection. Labor can take several hours, and a medical mask protects staff caring for a woman in childbirth and a newborn. This requirement correlates with the rules established in many Western countries and does not pose a threat to either the patient, nor the newborn, "Adamyan told reporters.
She explained that during the period of attempts, when maximum physical activity occurs, the mask can be removed for a while, but immediately after the birth of the child, it must be put on again.
"In each case, the issue is resolved individually, taking into account possible contraindications related to the patient's health, but it is important to note that wearing masks, first of all, protects the woman in labor, the newborn and the staff," Adamyan said.
