The head of the surgical department, leading surgeon, candidate of veterinary sciences Alexander Vasiliev told what objects that can be found in almost every home are dangerous for cats. According to him, animals are primarily attracted to certain materials.
"Rubber - starting from slippers, ending with sticky … The cat, due to the content of phenols, begins to gnaw erasers, toys, slippers, especially those cheap, which are sold for 100 rubles," - said the specialist.
In case the owner noticed that the pet has eaten something like this, urgent action should be taken. First of all, you should seek the help of veterinarians. You can induce vomiting in a cat, under anesthesia to do a gastroscopy, or at least an X-ray and ultrasound.
“If the owner missed this moment, as a rule, the first sign is refusal to eat, vomiting. Repeated vomiting is already a reason to run to the clinic, and not wait, it will help - it will not help. Or the stupidest option is to call the clinic and ask for help remotely,”Vasiliev explained.
The surgeon indicated that if the animal ate something that was not intended for food, there is an hour or two for active action. Then it may end up in the intestines.
“The problem is not that it's in the stomach. The problem is that it will go from the stomach to the intestines. Large fragments of rubber bands get stuck in the intestine and then it is impossible to get them out of the intestine, except surgically,”the doctor said.
The veterinarian added that in case of inactivity, an eraser or rubber toy eaten by a cat can result in the death of the intestine or the animal from vomiting, dehydration and other disorders.
