MOSCOW, January 29 - RIA Novosti. The Mediterranean diet may be the ideal type of diet for those with type 2 diabetes and do not yet need to take anti-hypoglycemic drugs. Endocrinologist Sarah Bruyere told Express about this.
The interlocutor of the publication referred to the research of scientists, the purpose of which was to determine how a certain diet affects the level of sugar in a person's blood.
Experts recruited 215 overweight volunteers with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Half of them were advised to follow a low-fat, limited-calorie diet, while the rest followed a low-carb Mediterranean diet high in seafood, fruits and vegetables.
Four years later, 70 percent of the participants in the first group needed to start taking antihyperglycemic drugs, while in the second group, only 44 percent received such recommendations.
According to Bruyere, the Mediterranean diet can not only maintain normal blood glucose levels in diabetics, but also help prevent the development of the disease in healthy people.
