High levels of the virus strongly suggest that replication occurs in the mouth - oral tissues have been shown to express the ACE-2 receptor, through which SARS-CoV-2 enters cells, and epithelial cells of the salivary ducts may be the first targets of infection. Therefore, reducing oral viral load is assumed to reduce transmission. According to preliminary results from a study by Unilever, only CPC rinse aids have shown a positive effect.
