Older people are easier to tolerate vaccination against the new coronavirus infection, TASS reports, citing an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta by the chief freelance geriatrician of the Ministry of Health, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olga Tkacheva, published on the newspaper's website on Sunday.

As Tkacheva said, the milder effect of vaccination on the elderly is explained by the peculiarities of the human immune system. “In a young man, the immune system in response to the introduction of a foreign protein … instantly begins to fight it. With age, she does not have such a reserve, therefore, obviously, there is no such overreaction either. The vaccine is tolerated more gently,”said the professor.

At the same time, she emphasized that, despite a milder reaction, the elderly also form a titer of antibodies that protect against infection. “The study, which was conducted on Sputnik V, showed the effectiveness of the vaccine in 91%, including in older people. This is a very good result, which testifies to reliable protection,”the professor emphasized.

Tkacheva also noted that today in Moscow 90% of residents of nursing homes have already been vaccinated against coronavirus infection. In other regions, vaccination of this category of citizens is also in full swing.
