MOSCOW, December 5 - RIA Novosti. Antimicrobial drugs, including antibiotics, cannot be prescribed to oneself, this can only be done by a doctor who takes into account all the factors of the disease, said Sergei Avdeev, chief freelance pulmonologist of the Russian Ministry of Health, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"Antimicrobial drugs in general and antibiotics in particular, like all drugs, have a number of undesirable side reactions that can range from relatively mild (allergic rash, stool disorders, etc.) to life-threatening (for example, anaphylactic shock) … Antimicrobial drugs should be prescribed only by a doctor who takes these and other factors into account, and can also correct therapy in time in case of adverse reactions, "said Avdeev, quoted by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Health.

He noted that the doctor, when prescribing antimicrobial drugs, also takes into account drug interactions, that is, how antibiotics can interact with those drugs that the patient receives for the treatment or prevention of chronic non-infectious diseases.

Uncontrolled use of antibiotics can lead to the development of side reactions, in addition, as a result of irrational use of drugs, microbes on the human body and inside it can acquire resistance to the drugs used and in the event of a bacterial infection, doctors will have to use other treatment regimens, sometimes with the use of several drugs, explained Avdeev.

"If we talk about the use of antibiotics as prevention of coronavirus infection, it is categorically unacceptable. Antibiotics do not work on any viruses, including the new coronavirus. They are prescribed only in case of bacterial complications of a new coronavirus infection," the pulmonologist emphasized.
