Scientists at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) have determined that having a vaccine against tuberculosis can affect the course of the coronavirus in a patient. This was reported by the press service of the university on the official website.

According to the researchers, a vaccine against tuberculosis, given at an early age, alters a person's immune system in such a way that it becomes easier for his body to fight the coronavirus. Experts note that in those countries where mass BCG vaccination is carried out, mortality from coronavirus is much lower. They also added that in regions where there is a large percentage of people vaccinated against tuberculosis, the coronavirus spreads more slowly.

Earlier, doctor and TV presenter Yevgeny Komarovsky spoke about how the coronavirus epidemic will affect the number of patients with tuberculosis. He noted that due to the "homelessness of the phthisiatric service" there is a risk that their number could grow significantly. The expert also predicted that the change in healthcare priorities due to COVID-19 could lead to an increase in mortality.
