In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or the cells do not respond to it. So glucose "gets complete freedom of action": its level in the blood rises.

A new study found that 93% of patients with this type of diabetes are at risk of a fatal heart attack within 10 years. Moreover, half of these people had no history of heart disease, reports Healthline.

According to experts, the average age of the participants was 70 years. Among almost 375 thousand volunteers, 72% also had high blood pressure, 60% had high cholesterol, 45% were obese, and 14% smoked. Cardiologists explain that diabetes accelerates atherosclerosis, which in turn clogs the arteries. This can cause inflammation that can trigger a heart attack.

Earlier, scientists from Harvard University identified another risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. It can also contribute to overweight problems.
