Doctor and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov spoke about how mutations of the coronavirus may develop in the future. He compared the evolution of COVID-19 to the development of the Spanish flu and the Hong Kong flu.

The expert explained that mutations are a natural state for viruses. According to him, in order for mutations to gain a foothold, they need to go through "natural selection." At the same time, the doctor stressed that COVID-19 is not one of the most "willingly" changing viruses.

“The virus, by definition, must evolve so that it spreads faster (survives in the fight against immune forces) - this time, and becomes less aggressive - it does not live on its own, it needs a“host”, a cell, it cannot become so deadly to deprive himself of his "habitat", - Myasnikov wrote in his Telegram channel.

He also added that modern vaccines are able to fight new mutations, since antibodies neutralize the protein "spike" of the virus as a whole, and not individual elements that undergo changes. In addition, the specialist said that the coronavirus inevitably awaits the evolution, which has already gone through the "Spanish Flu" and the "Hong Kong flu".

Earlier, Myasnikov told why it is important for the elderly and those who suffer from chronic diseases to get vaccinated against COVID-19. He recalled that, according to population studies, antibodies from the previously transferred coronavirus are present in 10-20% of the population of the countries where these studies were carried out. However, when identifying the percentage of deaths from COVID-19 for different states, those who have suffered a mild or asymptomatic illness are not taken into account.
