Cat scratches can lead to mental disorders, experts from North Carolina State University warn. The study was published in the journal Pathogens. Bartonellhenselae is a bacterium that leads to fever and intoxication in humans, sometimes to rashes, lesions of the eyes, nervous system and internal organs. Cats, mainly kittens, become the source of infection - the bacteria can be found in their secretions or on their claws. Previously, it was believed that the infection caused by the bacteria, although it is acute, does not last long. However, newer evidence suggests that Bartonella infection may cause long-term mental health problems. In 2019, scientists drew attention to the case of a teenager who developed symptoms of schizophrenia after being infected with Bartonella. They went away after being treated with antibiotics. The researchers now reviewed the medical history of 33 participants with sleep disorders, migraines, symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. In 29 of them, researchers found traces of Bartonella in their bodies. 24 participants reported skin changes during illness. In most cases, they developed stretch marks that were not associated with pregnancy or severe fluctuations in weight. The authors of the work hope that the new data will draw attention to the non-obvious causes of mental disorders and will help more patients.
