MOSCOW, 1 Feb - RIA Novosti. People with postcoid syndrome may suffer from shortness of breath and lack of oxygen. How to alleviate this condition and not harm yourself, said in an interview with radio Sputnik pulmonologist, general director of the clinic "Lor-Astma" Sergei Puryasev.
Recovery from COVID-19 usually takes a long time. Those who have suffered from this disease may experience postcoid syndrome. In particular, people complain of shortness of breath, which appears even with little physical activity. The fact is that the lungs affected by the coronavirus can recover very slowly.
Some try to fix the problem by breathing in pure oxygen with a special inhaler or oxygen cartridge. But with this method you need to be very careful, it can be more harm than good, warned Puryasev
"Pure oxygen, roughly speaking, burns the lungs, because it is a powerful oxidant, it coagulates the lungs. This is a temporary emergency method, but not for permanent use," explained the pulmonologist.
The criterion for using an oxygen inhaler or oxygen cartridge at home is low blood oxygen saturation, that is, a low saturation index. Thus, you can gain time to get to the hospital, but this is precisely an emergency method, Puryasev emphasized.
According to him, for people who still need pure oxygen at home to compensate for postcoid syndrome or the symptoms of COVID-19 itself, there are special devices that can be obtained in a hospital or clinic, if the doctor deems it necessary.
"For critically ill patients who no longer need inpatient treatment, there is a special oxygen concentrator. They are given to patients in hospitals and clinics. This is an expensive device, not everyone can afford it, therefore, by decision of the doctor, they are given out for a while," Puryasev said. …
