Experts report tetanus immunoglobulin deficiency. The drug is not produced in Russia, and it turned out to be unprofitable for foreign suppliers to import it. The portal "Pharmaceutical Bulletin" writes about this with reference to the chief freelance epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health Nikolai Briko. “Today, Russia does not produce human tetanus immunoglobulin, which is extremely needed for the emergency prevention of tetanus, especially among children and people with allergies,” Briko said during a roundtable at the State Duma Committee on Health Protection. As Nikolai Briko clarified, the drug for emergency prevention is purchased in China, but after the devaluation of the ruble in 2020, it became too expensive. Because of the unprofitability, Chinese suppliers import only a small amount of immunoglobulin ampoules. The problem with the drug for the emergency prevention of tetanus arose back in 2019. According to the analytical company AlphaRM, the sales volume of the drug with the INN “human anti-tetanus immunoglobulin” last year amounted to 70.4 thousand rubles. This is almost 5.8 times less than a year earlier - in 2018 the sales volume amounted to 411.3 thousand rubles. For eight months of 2020, the indicators were even lower. In the period from January to August, the drug was sold for only 34.7 thousand rubles. Tetanus is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacteria tetanus clostridium. The infection is not transmitted from person to person, infection occurs through scratches, abrasions or animal bites - that is, any violation of the integrity of the skin or mucous membranes. Bacteria are often found in soil, dust and dirt. To avoid tetanus, wounds must be carefully cleaned. The infection affects the nervous system and muscles and can lead to the following complications: vein thrombosis, bacterial pneumonia, myocardial infarction, and many others. There is a high mortality rate among unvaccinated people. Drugs for emergency tetanus prophylaxis should be given within 20 days of injury.
