In food service establishments such as school and student canteens, the risk of contracting coronavirus increases. The former chief sanitary doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko told Vechernyaya Moskva about this.
Russian physician Mikhail Lebedev said that the risk of contracting through food in catering establishments is extremely small - out of 220 thousand samples, the virus was detected only in 321.
- I still would not remove the issue of contamination through food from the agenda. For example, for the Chinese, where the epidemic began with a market in Wuhan, it was about specific foods - mammals, arthropods, and so on. Even today, food raw materials are closely monitored in this country, primarily frozen seafood. There were many publications regarding their deliveries from the Scandinavian countries, there were serious claims against one of our parties,”Onishchenko said.
Danger, according to the physician, can lie in wait in everyday life. Especially if a member of your family with coronavirus lives in the same apartment with you.
- Let's say a person is ill, but he is not hospitalized - there are no signs of intoxication, fever, cough. We isolate him in one room, but he still needs to go to the bathroom and, most importantly, eat. It is no coincidence that experts put hand hygiene in the first place, because the virus can be on surfaces for a long time, including dishes and cutlery. If you do not carefully process the dishes after the patient, just rinse them in cold water, and then eat from them yourself, there is a high risk of infection. So there is no need to oversimplify here,”he said.
Another example, when the risk of infection while eating is high, is student and school canteens, where, unfortunately, the observance of preventive measures is not always satisfactory, and it is impossible to eat wearing masks.
- The dining room is always a powerful contamination factor. All students gather in the same room, eat from the same dishes, and sometimes they are not washed thoroughly enough. In school canteens, it is even worse - in children, the virus proceeds easily, there are a lot of asymptomatic carriers. The dishes are reusable there, and if the dishwasher turns out to be faulty, thermal regimes are no longer observed, then it is the place of food that will become the main distributor of the disease. During the flu epidemics, we generally recommended closing canteens and transferring schoolchildren and students to dry rations, selling pantry products, those that do not use reusable dishes, '' he noted.
In cafes, restaurants, preventive measures, sanitization are observed more carefully, so the risk of infection there directly from food intake is relatively lower. Nevertheless, it all depends on the level of the institution and its responsibility.
