In order to prevent coronavirus infection in adults, drugs umifenovir and recombinant interferon-alpha (IFN-α) can be used. This is stated in the updated recommendations of the Russian Ministry of Health on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, published on the department's website.
"For the drug prevention of COVID-19 in adults, it is possible to prescribe recombinant IFN-α intranasally (drops or spray) or umifenovir," the document says.
As indicated in the recommendations, for drug prophylaxis in direct contact with the patient, the use of the drug hydroxychloroquine or recombinant IFN-α intranasally in combination with umifenovir is considered.
The Ministry of Health noted that for drug prevention of COVID-19 in pregnant women, only intranasal administration of recombinant IFN-α is possible.
“Taking into account the increase in morbidity and the high risks of the spread of infection on the territory of our country, it is advisable to prescribe drug prophylaxis to certain groups of the population, including medical workers,” the recommendations say.
