Swimming in fresh rivers and lakes can harm human health and cause disease. The interviewed doctors told NEWS.ru about this.

Virologist, allergist-immunologist Georgy Vikulov noted that, first of all, infection with various infections, for example, lamblia, is possible. They can be ingested by drinking contaminated water or swallowing it while bathing. In the same way, you can face rotavirus infection, which manifests itself in the form of vomiting and severe diarrhea.

Leptospira can penetrate from water through cuts and abrasions of the skin, mucous membrane of the eyes, nose and mouth, which cause leptospirosis (water fever). At the initial stage, the disease manifests itself in the form of high fever, chills, severe headaches and muscle pains, abdominal pain, and redness of the eyes.

Vikulov noted that eggs of parasites are sometimes found in unsalted reservoirs, since the water temperature around 20 degrees is considered a good breeding ground for helminths. Children and the elderly with chronic illnesses are most often at risk of infection.

When swallowing water from reservoirs, in addition to intestinal infections, there is a risk of contracting hepatitis A, cholera, poliomyelitis, adenovirus infection.

Therapist Lyudmila Lapa added that there is a chance to encounter salmonella on the coast and in the water. Sand and grass on beaches can be dangerous. According to her, in this way, worms often enter the body - through a wound on the skin or through the mouth. To avoid this, you need to use a litter and once again do not touch the ground with your hands.
