MOSCOW, January 10 - RIA Novosti. People make a number of mistakes trying to restore sleep after COVID-19 on their own, said in an interview with RBC the head of the Sleep Medicine Center of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Candidate of Medical Sciences Alexander Kalinkin.

According to the specialist, the most common among them are drinking alcohol before bedtime, naps and taking medications without a doctor's prescription. Also, drugs used to treat coronavirus can affect the quality of sleep.

"In case of breathing problems, lung damage, hypoxia at night, you do not need to use drugs that simply improve sleep. Here you still need to take care of lung function, and then sleep will recover itself," Kalinkin said.

In turn, the candidate of medical sciences Mikhail Poluektov emphasized that the coronavirus infection can serve as an impetus for the decompensation of mental illness, which will ultimately lead to sleep disturbance. In these cases, the expert recommends contacting a neurologist.

"Usually sleep disturbances, after the acute phase of the disease passes, go away, sleep normalizes. Most likely, the most correct tactic would be to calm yourself down, tell yourself that sleep disturbances are transient," Poluektov said.

Neurologist-somnologist Elena Tsareva advises to normalize nutrition and include mineral supplements in the diet to restore sleep.
