Thickening of the fingertips (drumstick syndrome) may be a sign of lung cancer, said Amy Hirst, a spokeswoman for the British Cancer Society.

According to the specialist, such a deformation is not the most common symptom of the disease, but it can also indicate other negative changes in the body, RIA Novosti reports.

"Drumstick syndrome manifests as changes in the shape of the nails or fingers that begin to look swollen," Hirst told The Express.

It is recommended to pay attention to the following changes: the base of the nail becomes soft, and the skin next to it becomes shiny; nails bend more than usual; the fingertips may become larger. If such problems are identified, the expert advises to immediately consult a doctor.

“This is because more blood is flowing into this area than usual. But we do not fully understand why this is happening,”the organization said.

Hirst added that there are many other symptoms of lung cancer. Among them: persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarse voice, swelling of the face or neck.

A symptom of drumsticks is a flask-shaped thickening of the terminal phalanges of the fingers and feet with a characteristic deformation of the nail plates in the form of watch glasses.

Earlier, experts from the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in the UK named five unexpected symptoms that may indicate the development of lung cancer.

In July, it was reported that scientists from the United States and China have developed a method that allows blood tests to detect five forms of cancer four years before the first signs appear, which are recorded by modern diagnostic methods.
