According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in total, over 102 million people have become ill with coronavirus infection in the world. More than 2.2 million of them have died. However, according to Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the RUDN University, some people may not be sick with COVID-19 at all.

As the specialist explained, there are three reasons for this. Firstly, sometimes antibodies already exist in the body, which indicates a meeting in the past with the causative agent of the disease.

"To unequivocally make a conclusion, for what reason they are unresponsive, is still at the stage of scientific discussion," RIA Novosti quotes him. According to him, scientists associate this with the presence of cross-immunity. In other words, the person has already encountered a disease caused by another coronavirus.

In addition, before meeting with COVID-19, a person was already infected with some kind of virus, which caused an increase in the level of interferons. If there are a lot of them, then the susceptibility to viral infections decreases.

The third reason is the existence of local immune complexes that prevent the virus from entering the level of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. Which of these mechanisms works is still a topic for scientific discussions, Voznesensky noted.

Previously, experts have identified a factor that doubles the likelihood of death from coronavirus. A total of 283 people hospitalized at the NHS Trust in North Bristol were analyzed.
