MOSCOW, November 2 - RIA Novosti. Russian doctors have estimated how long a person remains immune to coronavirus. This is reported by RBC.
Anatoly Altstein, a virologist at the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that, in addition to antibodies, cellular immunity is also involved in protecting the body from infections. He acknowledged that the body can really quickly lose antibodies from coronavirus, but at the same time reminded of the presence of cellular immunity.
"Therefore, it is difficult to say that a person is completely immune in five months," Altstein explained.
As the scientist noted, if the body was protected only by antibodies, there would be much more cases of re-infection. He recalled that lymphocytes, which the body produces, also fight against cells that are dangerous to health.
Professor of the Department of Virology at the Biological Faculty of Moscow State University Alexei Agranovsky, in turn, said that antibodies are stored in the body for a different period of time, which depends on the infection.
“Maybe COVID really is an infection that lasts five months,” he said.
At the same time, the scientist emphasized that the coronavirus vaccine will not be useless, even if the protection persists for several months.
"According to some reports, vaccination gives a stronger protection than a natural disease - a high titer of antibodies. There will be a stronger immune response," Agranovsky said.
Earlier, the journal Science published the results of a study by American scientists who found that in patients who have undergone COVID-19 in a mild form, antibodies persist for five months, after which the threat of infection reappears.
The coronavirus pandemic has spread to almost all countries. Currently, over 46 million cases of infection have been recorded, 1.2 million patients have died. The largest number of cases of infection is observed in the United States, India and Brazil.
