As explained in the WHO, the recommendation is based on the results of six controlled studies involving more than six thousand people. They showed that hydroxychloroquine had no significant effect on mortality and hospitalization rates.

In addition, experts do not exclude an increase in the risk of harmful effects when using this drug.

In view of the above, hydroxychloroquine is no longer seen as a priority for research, and resources should be used to evaluate other, more promising drugs for preventing COVID-19, according to the official WHO website.

Earlier it became known that WHO plans to develop recommendations on certificates of vaccination against COVID-19.
