Kaliningrad doctors were found not guilty of the death of a newborn in 2018. The jury delivered an acquittal to the acting head physician of the maternity hospital 4 Elena Belaya and the resuscitator-anesthesiologist of the regional perinatal center Elina Sushkevich on Thursday, December 10.

The jury agreed with the defense and considered unproven the version that the newborn was injected with a lethal dose of the drug. In the courtroom, no one hid their jubilation, Ekaterina Medvedeva, a correspondent for the Internet portal Novy Kaliningrad. Ru, told Business FM:

- The verdict was expected for, for example, Elina Sushkevich herself. On the eve, in a conversation with reporters, she admitted that she very much hoped for such a verdict, very much hoped. The lawyers had some preconditions of their own to believe that the decision would be made in favor of their principals. The jury was in the deliberation room for more than three hours. As a result, when asked whether the drug "Magnesium sulfate" was administered to newborn Akhmedov on November 6, as a result of which he died from acute poisoning, the jury answered "no": three people voted to prove this, five voted against. The investigation started on August 6, and it all ended in favor of the Kaliningrad doctors, which their colleagues and former patients are very happy about.

- The charges are completely dropped and will they be able to return to medical practice?

- The jury's verdict has to be given force by the judge who will describe all this. The court's decision will be only on December 16. But the judge immediately released both acquitted doctors, Elina Sushkevich and Elena Belaya, from house arrest.

- Did the acquitted themselves say something? Are they ready to return to medical practice, are there emotional and moral exhaustion?

- They said that it would be nice, of course, to rest for a few days. At the same time, both stated that they intend to return in the near future to work in the same positions in which they worked before the investigation and trial began. Combat mood. Both assure that they will rush straight with renewed vigor and will boldly look into the eyes of their colleagues, who, perhaps, even blamed them.

- How did the residents of the region react?

- Many Kaliningraders who followed this process were rooting for the doctors to be acquitted. There was a powerful informational support. Those who stood up for Elina Sushkevich and Elena Belaya have done a lot of social work. Therefore, naturally, those who closely followed this process, who were not indifferent to the fate of doctors, are now rejoicing. The people who were in court could not help catching the jubilation that the doctors themselves showed after the announcement of the verdict yesterday.

The jury's acquittal did not come as a surprise to the medical community. Especially with regard to the neonatologist Elina Sushkevich. Both should resume medical practice again, says the head of the cardiac intensive care department of the Moscow clinical hospital 29, cardiologist, doctor of medical sciences Alexei Erlikh:

- In relation to Sushkevich, the accusations were very ridiculous. It was hoped that the verdict would be acquitted.

- Will this story affect the attitude towards such incidents?

- Will not affect in any way. Such cases will continue until the approach, the inner world of medicine and healthcare in Russia changes. There must be a system that allows doctors to be held accountable in other ways than judicial ones. For example, to pay money if there are valid claims. In all countries of the world there is insurance for doctors against medical errors, special funds are formed that financially cover those claims that are put forward against doctors who have made some mistake. This has nothing to do with Sushkevich, because she was accused not of a medical error, but of premeditated murder, but this is about the same story.

According to Klops, after the judge said that both doctors were "considered acquitted," Elena Belaya thanked the participants in the process, and Elina Sushkevich burst into tears in the courtroom.
