The harm that a body infected with COVID-19 receives can manifest itself months after recovery. Alexander Chepurnov, a senior researcher at the Institute of Clinical Immunology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, a virologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, said this in an interview with the Vechernyaya Moskvy correspondent.
According to him, each case of COVID-19 is personal, including the degree of disorders in the human body that occur during the illness. Over time, as the doctor noted, "more and more new information about the ability of this virus to infect organs is being discovered."
- With the seeming well-being, postcovidians are faced with manifestations of the transferred disease. Sometimes negative changes can become noticeable after a month or two. Today, the coronavirus is increasingly referred to as pulmonary vascular disease. Doctors have long been fighting coagulation disorders. It turned out that it is necessary to fight against damage to the inner lining of the epithelium of the vessels, which are severely injured. Vascular problems lead to pressure surges and blood clotting problems, said the virologist.
The doctor clarified that often the problem is not pronounced, so patients sometimes do not understand that they need to see a doctor, although they need serious vascular rehabilitation. Since the times of the USSR, according to the interlocutor of "VM", our doctors know that after pneumonia, rehabilitation is required, which lasts up to a year.
As an example, Chepurnov recalled such a common consequence of covid as loss of smell.
- It does not disappear immediately after the end of treatment, but is observed for several months. This indicates the need for rehabilitation for the body, - said the doctor.
After some time, it may become clear that rehabilitation is needed not only for those who have had a pronounced coronavirus disease, but also for those who are asymptomatic, the doctor admitted. According to him, a whole long-term system of medical measures may be required, as after the US bombing of Vietnam, when American aircraft sprayed pesticides over the jungle, fields and settlements.
- Vietnamese doctors countered the deep chemical damage with the systemic improvement of the nation. This example is worth thinking about, - concluded the doctor.
In Russia, so far, the rehabilitation is carried out by commercial institutions, Chepurnov said. He stated the need for a serious systematic approach on a national scale.
