Restricting the rights of women to terminate pregnancy can lead to a catastrophe, namely to an increase in criminal abortions, said Oksana Pushkina, deputy head of the State Duma committee on family, women and children. So she commented on the initiative to ban abortion in private clinics.

Restricting women’s rights to terminate their pregnancies can be disastrous. I receive a lot of appeals from women's organizations and communities, personal letters from Russian women who ask not to let this happen, '' Pushkina told RIA Novosti.

She recalled that the prohibition of abortion in the post-war years led to a rapid increase in the number of clandestine operations. According to her, in 1950 alone, more than 1 million abortions were recorded in the USSR, and 90% of them were criminal. At the same time, the deputy stressed that she does not encourage abortions and considers them "one of the markers of social ill-being."

A woman is wise and calculating. The vast majority of women want to have children, this is our nature. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is not easy, and most often it is not ethical, but socio-economic reasons behind it - the inability to give the baby everything he needs, to provide him with prospects in life, '' summed up Pushkina.

As NEWS.ru wrote, over the past 18 years, the number of abortions in Russia has decreased three times. According to Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, in 2000, the number of artificial abortions carried out in the country's health care institutions exceeded 2 million. In 2018, doctors performed 661 thousand such manipulations. According to her, Russia has managed to build a system of counseling women who want to have an abortion. In 2018, 170 thousand women turned to special care rooms, of which 24% later refused to have an abortion.

To improve the efficiency of work to reduce the number of abortions, the budget of the Mandatory Medical Insurance Fund and the Social Insurance Fund for 2020 and beyond provides for funds to increase the cost of the birth certificate to 19 thousand rubles, Tatyana Golikova said.
