An international team of scientists studied the energy exchange of athletes who are involved in the most labor-intensive sports: the Ironman triathlon ("Iron Man", the cycle of international competitions "and the Tour de France."

It turned out that athletes are able to reach approximately the same metabolic limit, regardless of the sport they are involved in. If physical activity continues, practically without stopping, for several days or even months, then the threshold for an increase in calorie expenditure will still be 2.5 times in comparison with the resting state. With an increase in this threshold, a powerful catabolic reaction of the body sets in and it begins to "devour" itself in search of energy.
According to scientists, one of the explanations for this feature may be the ability of the digestive tract to break down food, programmed by nature. In other words, for a person who is striving to set a new world record, increasing the number of calories consumed will not help, since there is a limit to how many calories the body can effectively absorb during the day.
The energy expenditure of athletes started at a relatively high level, but gradually decreased. The energy consumption graph resembles a hyperbole, Novye Izvestia writes.
Earlier, we reported that blogger Davidich, in an interview with Yuri Dudyu, said that he did push-ups in the pre-trial detention center 1,500 times. The athletes decided to check it out.
