State Duma Deputy Nikolai Govorin submitted to the State Duma Health Protection Committee a proposal to exclude oxygen from the list of medicines. According to the official, such a decision will help avoid gas shortages in medical institutions that are fighting COVID-19. This was reported to ZAB RU by the press service of Nikolai Govorin.
“Today oxygen is one of the most important resources in the struggle for the life and health of those infected with the coronavirus, whose disease is severe. Rescuing patients largely depends on the supply of this gas. Until 2012, oxygen was not a drug and was not subdivided into medical and non-medical. The companies that produced it did not require licensing. However, the changes made at that time significantly reduced the ability of enterprises to produce oxygen and send it to medical organizations, since the concept of "medical oxygen" appeared, and its production became a licensed activity. Today, on the one hand, this has led to a shortage of gas on the market. On the other hand, such requirements deprived the medical organization of the right to buy gas from those enterprises that do not have a license. In a pandemic, this creates serious risks,”Nikolai Govorin explained.
As the deputy specified, the technologies for the production of medical and non-medical oxygen do not differ. The composition of the gas is homogeneous and can be used to support patients.
