Scientists from the Baylor College of Medicine in the United States have found that the hormone asprosin regulates the activity of areas of the brain that are responsible for controlling appetite and body weight. Suppression of the activity of this compound reduces the feeling of hunger and reduces the amount of food consumed. Briefly about the scientific work of the researchers is described in a press release on the MedicalXpress website.

Experts have found that people with Progeria, who suffer from premature aging and dystrophy, and also have an abnormally weak appetite, have a mutation in the FBN1 gene. The fibrillin-1 protein encoded by defective DNA lacks a small fragment. This part, called asprosyne, is cut off from fibrillin in healthy people and acts as a separate molecule.

The researchers bred mice with the same mutation as those found in progeria patients. The introduction of asprosin into the body increased the appetite in animals.

It turned out that the hormone interacts with neurons in the hypothalamus. It is known that there are two types of specific nerve cells - the AgRP neurons, which stimulate appetite, and the POMC neurons, which suppress it. Asprosin affects both types of cells differently, increasing the feeling of hunger. In addition, it has been shown that overweight people have high blood levels of the hormone.

The researchers believe the study results will help develop new treatments for obesity based on lowering the concentration of asprosin.
