Those who set the goal of losing weight by the summer expect to feel confident and happy after dropping a few pounds. And the truth is - what could be nicer than to fit into any dress by summer and put on long-forgotten skinny jeans. However, psychologists assure: to feel happy and confident, weight loss alone is not enough. About how not to become a victim of a diet and why losing weight does not solve all problems, we talked with a psychiatrist, graduate student of the Department of Psychiatry and Addictions at the Clinic of Psychiatry. Korsakova by Anna Kulikova.
Happiness is not in diets? According to the expert, often the disappointment from the successful results of the diet is caused by the fact that a person expects a completely different effect from losing weight.
First, he associates responsibility for his life, success and happiness with extra pounds and achieves a certain result in the diet. “But how does our brain work? A person thinks: I don’t get a new job, not because I don’t want to and I’m afraid of social stress, but because I have five extra pounds that will not allow me to make a pleasant impression on the employer,” - explains Kulikova.
Relationships with the opposite sex may also be the true cause of dissatisfaction with life, the psychiatrist adds. For example, a girl may be afraid to change her partner or sort things out. She decides that after losing weight, men themselves will fall at her feet, and she will not have to be responsible for her own choice.
If happiness has not increased According to the psychiatrist, if after the long-awaited loss of kilograms the mood has not improved, it's time to find out the true reasons for the negativity.
First of all, you need to honestly look at yourself and your life. “You need to answer yourself how much you are satisfied with your personal life and whether you want to change it. You also need to honestly look at your self-esteem: ask how much I love myself or not and what contributes to this,” explained Anna Kulikova. She advised to work with this gradually, step by step - and the first should be the awareness of your problems.
Happiness prevents the fear of gaining extra pounds again During and after losing weight, a person often gets hung up on counting calories, forgetting about other aspects of life.
“I always ironically compare weight loss activities with alcoholism. Like an alcoholic, a person who is losing weight associates his whole reality with an object of lust and passion: someone with alcohol, and someone with extra pounds,” the psychiatrist notes. the question: why is a person so afraid of real life? It's just a desire to get away from problems in such a "semi-legal" way.
How not to return to your previous weight Nutritionists advise to reduce weight as smoothly as possible. The longer we lose weight, the more chances that those extra pounds won't come back. And if you sit on one buckwheat for a month, the excess weight will definitely return along with the return to the usual diet. And as a result, the body weight may be even higher than it was before the start of the hunger strike. It is considered safe for health to lose up to 4-5 kilograms per month. In no case should you lose weight by 10 or more kilograms.

Why some people want to return to excess weight Paradoxically, some who have lost weight soon realize that they were much more comfortable in their previous weight, and even regret that they became slim. According to the psychiatrist, this may be due to the greater "importance" of obese people and problems with sexuality.
"This is often the case with women.Sometimes being overweight is a problem of a very suppressed sexual component. An overweight woman may not arouse such sexual interest in a partner. And when she loses weight, she is more interested in men. But if in childhood she was traumatized by a man (for example, a destructive relationship with her father or episodes of sexual abuse), she will try again to put on this "armor" of fat, "said Kulikova.
The second reason is the great "significance" of an overweight person. When he enters society, he is immediately visible, as if he is more massive and significant. And thin women have to defend themselves with more energy and emotions. On this, many who have lost weight also begin to "drift".
How not to become "fat skinny" Another pitfall: with the wrong diet, there is a high probability of losing more muscle than fat. Then the person will have a lack of muscle mass and an excess of fat. This usually happens when there is an acute nutritional deficiency. The fact is that muscles consume their potential energy faster than adipose tissue. But it is much more difficult to restore muscle mass - you will need to regularly perform special exercises.
Losing weight too quickly can also lead to serious health problems. With a body weight deficit (below 18), hormonal disruption may occur, which is quite difficult to recover.
Experts advise, before starting to lose weight, go to a nutritionist and determine the body composition: how much muscle mass and fat in the body. Based on this, the specialist will help you choose the optimal diet.
How to tune in to losing weight According to the psychologist, there are two types of motivation - "from something" and "to something." In the first case, we wake up, see folds on the stomach, hate ourselves and choose a harder diet. But this behavior breaks down at the moment when there are first results and the anxiety subsides. The emotional stimulus falls apart, and the person buys a croissant, which is far more appealing than a grueling diet.
Motivation "for something" should ignite a person from the inside - for someone it is health or better health, for someone - self-love.
In the first case, a person suffers when losing weight, and in the second, he enjoys what he does every day. The most important thing is to create an emotionally pleasing backdrop for these constraints. Don't put yourself on broccoli if you hate it. Find a system for yourself that is adaptive for you. Sometimes just stopping eating at night is already 50% success. The most important thing is to enjoy the process, not the final result.
