Scientists from Yale University conducted a study and found out why women carry coronavirus infection easier than men.
According to the data, men are 1.7 times more likely to die from coronavirus infection than women. These statistics are based on fundamental biology. The fact is that women have two X chromosomes, and men have one. But it is this chromosome that is rich in genes that regulate the immune response. Despite the fact that one of the X chromosomes in women is muted, genes from each X chromosome are able to activate the immune system and alert the body to the onset of pathogens.
Another important factor that plays a role in this issue is sex hormones. Studies in mice have shown higher mortality rates in male rodents. Scientists have concluded that the female hormone estrogen has a protective function. At the same time, the male hormone showed a reverse reaction.
A year has passed since the onset of coronavirus infection. During this time, scientists and doctors have managed to study the virus sufficiently, and Russian scientists have created a vaccine against the disease. Doctor Elena Malysheva recommends those at risk to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Pregnant women are in this risk group.
