Olga Malysheva, a gynecologist at the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of the FMBA of Russia, Candidate of Medical Sciences, told how the coronavirus proceeds in most pregnant women, and during which period of gestation the risk of complications is highest.

According to the latest data from the Royal Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Great Britain, the risk of contracting coronavirus during pregnancy is even lower than that of ordinary people. A woman's immune system is changing: the production of antibodies and white blood cells increases, which makes her less vulnerable.
Most women who become infected with COVID-19 have mainly mild to moderate symptoms - fever, cough. Myalgia, shortness of breath, loss of smell, diarrhea are much less common.
74% of pregnant women carry the coronavirus asymptomatically, the doctor said.
Infection with covid during pregnancy is not an indication for termination. There is no evidence that the disease increases the risk of fetal malformations and stillbirth.
If you suspect COVID-19, the first step is to take a PCR test. There is no need to immediately do CT of the lungs - the study has a fairly high level of radiation and is carried out according to strict indications, the gynecologist warned.
The frequency of development of severe forms of the disease depends on the presence of risk factors - obesity, hypertension, diabetes. According to the expert, most often, complications caused by coronavirus develop at 34 weeks of gestation.
Dr. Malysheva noted that the possibility of transmitting the virus to a child during pregnancy has not been proven. With mild and moderate forms of the disease, a woman gives birth through the natural birth canal. In severe forms, the choice is made in favor of a cesarean section.
"95% of newborns are born in a satisfactory condition and most of them have a negative COVID-19 test," added Olga Malysheva.
