Perhaps, in winter there is no spice more popular than cinnamon. It is decorated with cappuccino and latte, it is added to pies, desserts and gingerbread, without cinnamon it is impossible to imagine one of the most popular Christmas drinks - mulled wine. However, if this spice is eaten all the time, it can cause serious and sometimes irreparable harm to our body.

People discovered cinnamon a long time ago: even before our era, at the time of the great Phoenician seafarers, this spice was brought to the Mediterranean countries. Apparently, cinnamon came to Russia much later: one of the first mentions of it is contained in the famous Domostroy. In the old days, it was used not only as a food additive and flavoring: cinnamon was valued for its medicinal qualities. In particular, it was believed that it promotes increased libido, strengthens the walls of the stomach and has a beneficial effect on the digestive process. Sokolsky, candidate of pharmaceutical sciences, writes about this in the article "Spices and World History" for the journal "Science and Life".
Despite its beneficial properties, cinnamon can have an extremely negative effect on our body. In particular, it is better for expectant mothers to temporarily exclude this spice from their diet. According to Firstcry Parenting, a website for young parents, cinnamon can trigger blood sugar problems and increase bleeding. The fact is that it thins the blood. Therefore, if you regularly eat cinnamon during pregnancy, you run the risk of severe bleeding during childbirth, which exceeds the norm.
However, not only pregnant women should be concerned about their health. The fact is that cinnamon contains a large amount of coumarin. According to the 2010 study "Toxicology and Risk Assessment of Coumarin" by Abraham and Lindner, high concentrations of this substance can lead to abnormal liver function. This finding is supported in part by evidence from another scientific work, Does Cinnamon Cause Acute Hepatitis ?, published in 2015 by Branchot and Patel. It describes the case of a 73-year-old female patient who over a period of time consumed a lot of cinnamon and eventually developed a liver infection.
Moreover: indirectly, cinnamon can be the cause of the appearance of cancers. In particular, too high a concentration of coumarin in the body partly contributes to the appearance of tumors in the lungs and other vital organs. This is evidenced by the data of the 1998 English textbook "Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology".
Therefore, you should closely monitor how much cinnamon you eat. And even if you are very fond of this nutritional supplement, try to be discreet and do not consume large amounts of it daily. Your favorite spice is not worth risking your health because of it.
