Endocrinologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Nadezhda Lebedeva spoke about drugs that reduce weight.

The expert emphasized that if a drug reduces weight, it does not mean that it is used for this very purpose. The harm from the side effects and complications of therapy is greater than the benefits of using it for weight loss.

In clinical practice, three classes of drugs are used to treat obesity.

The first one is glucagon-like peptide agonists (liraglutide). They have a complex effect, but the main effect is to reduce appetite.

The second class is gastrointestinal lipase inhibitors (orlistat). They reduce weight by reducing the absorption of fat in the diet. Thus, the fat and calorie content of food is reduced.

The third class is serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (sibutramine). They affect receptors in the brain and reduce appetite.

There are other medicines that can help you lose weight. For example, biguanides, or "everyone's favorite" metformin. In case of impaired carbohydrate metabolism (prediabetes or diabetes) and overweight, it lowers blood glucose levels, reduces and stabilizes weight.

Some antidepressants (fluoxetine) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are suitable for the treatment of obese and depressive eating disorders.

Type I cannabinoid receptor blockers (rimonabant) are approved for weight loss in many countries. The exception is the United States. It is believed that while taking the drug, the risk of suicidal thoughts increases.

Peptides (leptin, melanocortin-4 receptor agonists) are aimed at regulating appetite.

Nutritional supplements are also used and are relatively safe, although their effectiveness has not been proven.

Thyroid hormone drugs are not weight loss drugs, but can be prescribed when obesity is combined with hypothyroidism.

For the short-term treatment of obesity, sympathomimetics (diethylpropion, ephedrine) are used. The course of treatment is no more than 12 weeks. However, ephedrine is included in the list of potent substances, and therefore is not recommended for the treatment of obesity.

Antiepileptic drugs (topiramate) affect weight, but they are used strictly according to the main indication, the doctor emphasized.
