How can a mother-to-be reduce discomfort and improve well-being? Let's tell! Pregnancy is a great happiness, but at the same time it is a great test for the female body. One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is swelling and heaviness in the legs, pain and discomfort in the feet, knees and spine. Why is this happening? We deal with Olga Chizhevskaya (@olga_chiz), executive director of the League of Podiatry Association, and Vladimir Ilyich Nechaev, orthopedic traumatologist, chairman of the board of the League of Podiatry Association of Medical Centers and Doctors, chief specialist of the FormTotics Medical System in Russia. How the feet change during pregnancy During pregnancy, the expectant mother can gain about 15 kg. Since the baby is usually not symmetrically located, the center of gravity shifts not only forward, but also sideways. These natural changes cause a redistribution of the load, the pressure on the knees and feet increases significantly. The spine tilts reflexively, scoliosis occurs. It is important to take into account the change in hormonal levels. The body gradually prepares for childbirth, the ligaments and fascia (the connective membranes of muscles and tendons) become softer, more elastic, and the connective tissue that holds the bones of the foot in a physiological position can "stretch". The foot itself, as it were, spreads out under the influence of gravity. In the second half of pregnancy, another serious problem joins - edema. Due to the increased size of the uterus, the outflow of blood from the veins of the lower extremities is disturbed. The decreased general mobility of a woman during this period only exacerbates the situation. All these changes, which are inevitable with a normal pregnancy, can lead to pain in the feet and knees, muscle cramps in the legs and varicose veins. Flattening of the arch of the foot leads to excessive pronation, gait changes. It hurts to walk, there is heaviness and discomfort in the legs. After childbirth, the ligaments restore their strength, but at the same time they can "fix" the developed pathological changes in the position of bones and joints. It is important not to miss this moment and restore the symmetry of the spine and foot bones in time. How to avoid flat feet during pregnancy During pregnancy, it is imperative to wear individual orthopedic insoles. They provide support for the arch of the foot and prevent it from "flattening" in the shoe. After pregnancy, they help maintain the physiological position of bones and joints until the connective tissue returns to normal. If there are no problems with the incorrect distribution of the load on the feet, the spine and joints of the legs will also be safe. Orthopedic insoles should take into account the individual characteristics of the pregnant woman, including the natural dynamics of movement. Therefore, the choice of a podiatrist who will be engaged in their manufacture should be approached more carefully. The second important point is the right choice of shoes. It should support the foot and provide adequate cushioning. During pregnancy, you should give up socks with tight elastic bands, tight shoes and high heels. There is no need to create additional obstacles to blood flow in the legs. How to get rid of heaviness in your legs during pregnancy Try to sit with your legs raised more often. Gravity will cause blood to flow away from your legs and swelling will diminish. When driving a car, you need to take breaks, stop and stretch your legs. For example, walk a little around the car to get the muscles to work.Regular massage gives a good effect. Move from bottom to top, from heel to hip. Before going to bed, you can massage your feet. This is not only useful, but also quite enjoyable. For massage, you can use essential oils, unrefined coconut or cocoa butter. With edema, special attention will have to be paid to diet. It is necessary to reduce the consumption of salt: give up sausages, smoked meats and pickles, salt less food during cooking. Don't forget to drink clean water. Do not be afraid that this will intensify the swelling: restoration of the water balance leads to the fact that the fluid is less retained in the body. Another method of prevention is staying active: light exercise, walks in the fresh air, weather permitting. You can do yoga for pregnant women or do some light exercises. Moderate activity restores normal circulation and improves mood. Do not forget about prevention, and if you experience pain and heaviness in the legs, contact a qualified podiatrist. And let nothing stop you from enjoying your pregnancy. _ Photo: Depositphotos _ Important to know: How to teach a child to help others. 7 main tips "My 100 rubles will not help anyone."
