The synthetic scent of sandalwood can accelerate hair growth and slow down the aging of hair follicle cells. An international group of scientists came to this conclusion after conducting a series of experiments with human scalp. The results of the study are published in the journal Nature Communication.

Olfactory receptors can be found not only in the nose, but also in other organs, for example, in the intestines and kidneys, as well as in keratinocytes - cells of the upper layer of the skin. It is already known that one of these cutaneous olfactory receptors, OR2AT4, is responsible for the regeneration of the skin, and that it activates the scent of sandalwood. When molecules of a substance with the scent of sandalwood hit the OR2AT4, it triggers a complex signaling process, as a result of which skin cells begin to divide more intensively and move faster to the desired place. It is also known that approximately the same molecular processes must occur for new hair to grow on the skin. Scientists from Germany and the UK decided to find out if the smell of sanalwood can not only heal wounds, but also help grow hair.

To test their hypothesis, the researchers conducted a series of experiments. They took scalp samples from volunteers who underwent a facelift procedure (hair loss is one of the possible complications after this operation) and placed them in a solution with molecules that carry the artificial smell of sandalwood. After six days, the scientists checked the result and found that the hormone responsible for hair growth began to be produced in the samples on average 25-30% more intensively.

In addition, the OR2AT4 receptor, when activated by the scent of sandalwood, slows down the aging of cells associated with hair growth. Scientists discovered this effect by blocking the receptor. The level of growth hormone in the skin samples immediately dropped, and the rate of cell death in the hair follicles, on the contrary, became higher. In the future, the authors plan to continue research in this direction and develop a drug for the treatment of baldness based on the synthetic scent of sandalwood.
