Scientist explains the link between coronavirus and blood group

Most often, people with the second blood group are sick with coronavirus. They also have a higher risk of severe illness. Even in the first wave of infection, doctors drew attention to the fact that such patients stay in the intensive care unit longer than those with other blood groups, especially the first.

However, people with the first blood group cannot consider themselves invulnerable to coronavirus infection, says Alexey Maschan, pediatric hematologist-oncologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

- A number of independent studies recently conducted in China, the United States and Iran have already accurately established a link between blood type and the severity of coronavirus infection. The conclusion of scientists: carriers of blood group A (second group) have a greater risk of a severe course of the disease. People with group O (first) are least at risk. What biological mechanisms underlie these differences?

- Indeed, a number of studies indicate a protective role of blood group O in relation to the severe course of coronavirus infection - the risk is approximately halved. This does not mean, however, that people with the first blood group can feel any calmer. There is nothing more foolish than relying on statistics to assess individual risk. For each of us, regardless of blood type, as well as from anything else, the risk is either zero or one hundred percent.

The biological basis of the association of the first blood group with a less severe course and a reduced risk of death may be associated, although this is still a purely hypothetical relationship, with a lower level of large molecules of the von Willebrand factor, which causes thrombosis of small vessels.

- Can we assume that this is due to the statistical prevalence of blood groups? After all, the second group occurs most often.

- Studies that have established a relationship between the severity of coronavirus infection and blood groups, naturally, "standardized" the indicators, taking into account the prevalence of groups in different populations. This is a statistic rule that is passed either in the first or in the third year of medical schools.

- Does the Rh factor affect the course of the disease and resistance to infection with a new coronavirus infection?

- There are no data on the Rh factor similar to the data on ABO blood groups.
