Coronavirus can lead to a mental disorder due to the impact on the circulatory and central nervous systems of a person, said State Duma deputy, former chief sanitary doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko. It is reported by "Interfax".
“The psyche is disturbed, behavioral changes appear - this is, it is obvious,” the specialist said. According to him, in the course of the disease, changes occur in the central nervous system, but there is no evidence of an increase in suicidal tendencies among those infected.
The MP added that COVID-19 can lead to damage to the circulatory system, which negatively affects the blood supply to the brain. “The platelet phenomena that occur there can create focal ischemia of the central nervous system, and depending on its localization, there may be changes in the central nervous activity,” Onishchenko explained.
Earlier, a psychotherapist, candidate of medical sciences Anton Yezhov said that the depression that occurs in some COVID-19 patients is explained by the experience of loss - with coronavirus, a person loses, for example, sense of smell and physical activity. If the emotional state goes beyond the limits, it is recommended to contact a specialist and get the necessary treatment, the doctor said. Ignoring depression can be dangerous, he warned.
