LONDON, 23 Nov - RIA Novosti. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the lockdown imposed by the coronavirus pandemic on December 3 in England will be replaced by a tightened three-tier system of local restrictions.

"Our plan is to make it safely until spring," Johnson said.

He explained that winter is already the peak of viral diseases, and the prevalence of COVID-19 remains very high.

"Lockdown will end on December 2 and will not be extended. People will be able to meet on the street without gathering more than six people. Non-food stores, gyms, sports centers and hairdressers will open," the prime minister said, speaking to parliamentarians via video link.

He also said that the restriction on the work of pubs and restaurants until 10 pm, which existed before the start of the lockdown, will be lifted.

The maximum, third, level will be in many ways similar to the current lockdown: non-food stores, hotels and gyms will be closed, people will be instructed to work from home whenever possible.

"More districts than before will move to the maximum level of restrictions," the prime minister warned.

Johnson will announce which region will fall into which level of restrictions on Thursday.

The prime minister also said that it is planned to ease restrictions on Christmas, but the celebration of the main holiday of the year will not be "customary". A decision on plans for Christmas will be made at a later date, after consultation with the authorities in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
