Scientists at the University of Surrey in England have found that moderate intermittent fasting is better at reducing the risk of heart disease than low-calorie foods. The article was published in the British Journal of Nutrition. This was announced in a press release on EurekAlert !.

The study involved overweight people who had to lose five percent of their weight. One group of volunteers ate as usual only five days a week, while the other reduced the calorie intake by 600 kilocalories (kcal) per day.

The experiment dropped out about 20 percent of the participants who could not follow the diet or lose weight, and 27 people completed the program.

It turned out that a 5: 2 diet, in which a person limits the calorie intake to 500-600 kilocalories for two days a week, promotes the rapid assimilation of fat. People in this group managed to achieve the desired result in 59 days, and the daily diet took 73 days. At the same time, moderate intermittent fasting contributed to a decrease in systolic blood pressure by nine percent in people from the first group and by two percent in the second.
