Specialists from the Department of Fundamental Medicine of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), together with their Russian and Japanese colleagues, conducted research related to the effects of coronavirus on the human body, the press service of the university reports.

Studies have addressed the possibility of damage by the virus to red blood cells - red blood cells responsible for the transport of hemoglobin and associated oxygen. The results are published in the journal Archiv EuroMedica.

As the scientists explain, the premature breakdown of red blood cells is the primary reaction to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The patient may suspect a pathology by smelling iron. Dead erythrocytes are capable of affecting the neurons of the brain, blood vessels, internal organs, which no longer have enough oxygen. In severe cases, the organs may even refuse to work. That is why ventilators do not always help - there is no one to transport oxygen.

At risk are everyone who has low hemoglobin - the elderly, hypertensive people, people suffering from obesity, diabetes, pregnant women, HIV-infected and cancer patients.

Scientists suggest that the main target of the virus is the red bone marrow, where it damages the endothelium, which normally regulates the migration of maturing cells into the blood.

"It is for this reason that strange things happen to the immune cells, and megakaryocytes, very large bone marrow cells, were found in the tissues of various organs. Normally, they become sources of platelets, which are responsible for blood clotting, but with COVID-19 they thicken blood in the vessels unnecessarily. ", - explains Galina Reva, professor of the Department of Fundamental Medicine at the School of Biomedicine of the Far Eastern Federal University.

She noted that pulmonary fibrosis is the most obvious manifestation of COVID-19, but since it is caused by megakaryocytes "thrown" into the blood, similar phenomena can occur in tissues of other organs - the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas and thyroid gland.

In addition, COVID-19 leads to the disappearance of white pulp cells in the spleen - tissue where immunity cells, T cells, and B-lymphocytes, which are responsible for infectious immunity, mature. That is why secondary infections against the background of coronavirus are so dangerous - the body has nothing to defend with.

Scientists continue their research, and in their next stage they will focus on intercellular connections in order to understand which body cells need to be stimulated in a severe course of the disease.
