MOSCOW, November 19. / TASS /. According to preliminary data, tobacco consumption in Russia decreased by 0.5% in 2020. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Oleg Salagay on the International Day of Smoking Cessation.

"At the moment, the burden of tobacco dependence is great, but the dynamics of reducing tobacco consumption across the country remains. Preliminary data show that overall tobacco consumption over the year has decreased by about 0.5%," he said at the coordination council under the Russian Ministry of Health on reducing consumption of tobacco and other nicotine-containing products.

Salagay stressed that smoking both regular and electronic cigarettes, as well as hookahs, is one of the serious risk factors for worsening the condition with coronavirus infection. "The data is different, but most of the researchers agree on the increased risk of death and the increased risk of ventilation in patients who smoke. The risks are also associated with e-cigarettes and hookahs, so in this case, these products are no exception." - he noted.

At the end of November 2019, the Russian government approved the anti-tobacco concept of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation until 2035, which applies not only to cigarettes, but also to vapes and tobacco heating systems. The concept envisages a decrease in the number of smokers among the adult population by 2035 to 21%. According to the Ministry of Health, 300-400 thousand Russians die annually from health problems caused by smoking (about 20% of the total number of deaths - 1.9 million people).
