Addiction or not

- Is it correct to distinguish between alcoholism and domestic drunkenness?

Here's an example that makes a great illustration.

Very few people drink more than two days in a row. If a hangover syndrome is formed, and a person is drawn to alcohol on the second day after drinking, then yes, we are talking about the second stage of alcoholism.

All those who abuse know about what stage they are at, what this degree is, it is another matter that they do not say it out loud and do not discuss it with anyone.

We have strong alcoholic traditions in Russia. Now there will be holidays and many of us will go to companies where there will be alcohol. And here there is another marker for determining our relationship with alcohol: why do we go to visit, to a party? If you communicate, interact, and at the same time, if there is no alcohol there, then it does not matter, it will not become a meaningful beginning for a meeting. Another thing is the situation when people stipulate the number of bottles, take more of them, so as not to "run afterwards".

The holiday without alcohol is “wasted” in the perception of addicts. In a healthy sense, alcohol complements the holiday, but if it becomes all the same - New Year or Bastille Day, and just to drink - here you need to start worrying.

There is always a choice

-Psychological portrait of the addict: do people of a certain type become alcoholics, or absolutely anyone can get sick?

Purely theoretically, under certain conditions, any person can get alcohol addiction. There are many studies on the genetics of alcoholic disease, enzyme characteristics, molecular biochemistry, but there are those that relate to psychology, the conditions of upbringing, trauma. As a result of the above, the risk of developing the disease increases, but we are not saying that a person who has a certain combination of genes, characteristic of all addicts, will necessarily be an alcoholic.

We only assert that there is a certain risk: alcohol will very quickly be incorporated into biochemical processes, or it will be integrated into his system of life values, if we give preference to the psychological position of the formation of the disease. That is, a person with a huge predisposition to alcoholism may not become addicted.

At the same time, if you get into some kind of collective, in some very difficult living conditions, then any person can suffer, especially if his environment considers the use of alcohol to be paramount and obligatory.

It should be noted here that society periodically changes its attitude to alcohol, it is cyclical: from popularization to a complete ban. Remember both the hymns to Dionysus and the "dry law".

In modern society, we live much "faster" than we lived 50 years ago. There is more information flow, more stress, and there is now a version that is being actively developed that people with alcohol addiction and people with anxiety disorders have similarities. Indeed, alcohol at a certain stage reduces anxiety, so a person seeks relief from his condition in drinking.

Alcohol and coronavirus

- Has this year been any special in terms of negative emotions due to the pandemic?

Every year there is more and more pressure on people, and, unfortunately, the most accessible means of tranquilization (calming) are neither psychotherapy, nor sports, nor yoga. Most people choose psychoactive substances that can bring the modern person into the “chemical comfort zone”.

Now we are faced with a coronavirus infection. And this year has become extremely difficult for many.Psychiatrists in all countries have noted an increase in the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Sometimes in supermarkets, in carts of Ryazan residents, and not only them, you can see huge boxes of alcohol.

Pour, or I'll leave

- And a little more about one more stereotype - how much female alcoholism differs from male alcoholism, or gender differences do not play any role here?

Yes, women have certain biochemical differences from men and there is evidence that their addiction develops a little faster. But this is not the main thing. Women are more condemned, they have a certain image in society, so they drink secretly.

A year or two or three, which a woman drinks at home, is not visible to neighbors and surroundings. And when a woman loses control and stops paying attention to her appearance, people say: "Oh, what she suddenly became." But this "wow effect": yesterday I was a beauty from Instagram, and today I became "an unkempt woman in a dressing gown", in fact, does not happen abruptly.

There is one more detail - over the past 10-15 years, attitudes towards women have undergone significant changes. And before that, the clients of bars and restaurants were still men. Now there are more and more girls and women there. They began to drink more often, and they are not necessarily addicted, but such a metamorphosis has occurred. At the same time, I don't even want to think that alcohol consumption was the result of emancipation.

Once again, I would like to remind you of the responsibility to children. We should not show our attitude to life's difficulties through the formulas: "Tired - get drunk", "No money - get drunk", "you need to solve matters - get drunk." If we do this, then we shouldn't be surprised that children broadcast the same thing and the vicious circle makes another round.

So how much can you drink on the upcoming holidays?

I can’t say how much you need or don’t need to drink to be considered a healthy person. Every year, thousands of people die in Russia due to abuse during the New Year holidays (in 2019, from January 1 to 12, according to the federal project "Sober Russia", 12 thousand people died - editor's note). The addicts will "go into a tailspin", the abusers are threatened with poisoning, and drinking, and criminal options for the development of the New Year holidays.

Try not to harm yourself and those around you with these “cute” alcoholic Russian traditions. Take care that your case does not become part of the sad statistics.
