Over the years of a large-scale anti-tobacco campaign, the share of smokers among our compatriots has decreased to 26%, but these are millions of people who smoke an average of 16-18 cigarettes a day. Everyone knows that smoking is harmful, expensive and shortsighted. Why, then, does the hand reach for the pack again? We have collected the 7 most popular answers to the question: "Why do you smoke?" Reason one: I like the taste of cigarettes

Andrey Senchukov:

- A very popular answer among experienced smokers. And this is no coincidence. Over time, the smoker's perception of taste and smell changes, it becomes weaker: taste and olfactory receptors become dull, in part even atrophy. In order to fully taste the taste of a cigarette, there are certain exercises, for example, according to the Zhdanov method. In the meantime, just remember your very first cigarette, was it tasty ?!

Alexander Fomin:

- People are convinced that they like the taste. And maybe that's true when you consider the sheer amount of flavor and addiction. But taste is not a reason to inhale poisonous smoke every day. A person may like the taste of an orange, but if a person runs out of oranges late at night, they will not run to the store. And a person is not afraid of the fact that you can forget about the taste of borscht on vacation.

Reason two: I like the ritual of smoking

Andrey Senchukov:

- If you like the ritual of smoking itself, try to do the same as before, with one small difference - do not light the cigarette. The pack, the lighter, the environment - let it all remain unchanged. You can even make the same hand movements as before, "shaking off the ashes." Just don't inhale the poisoned smoke. If you can do it, great! And if not, admit that it's not about the ritual.

Alexander Fomin:

- Smokers think they enjoy the ritual. But they forget that almost everyone had to smoke spent cigarettes, which are not related to the ritual. Or even smoke gobies. Any ritual has its own purpose: for example, let's take a ritual in a restaurant, which includes service, beautiful dishes, serving, pleasant music. And people pay a lot of money for the "dine in a restaurant" ritual. But try not to feed them! In this case, they will no longer come to the restaurant, they will not like the ritual. Because you want to eat deliciously. Or a ritual of courtship, when a young guy gives a girl flowers, gifts. And if there is no reaction from the girl, then the ritual disappears somewhere. The purpose of the courtship ritual is to gain favor. As for the "smoking" ritual, there is only one goal for the smoker - a puff, which contains nicotine.

Reason three: a cigarette helps you relax

Andrey Senchukov:

- Doctors have already proven that cigarettes not only do not help to cope with stress, but, on the contrary, depress the nervous system. And the short relaxation that a smoker receives with the first puff of another cigarette is actually connected with the satisfaction of the desire to smoke. Think for yourself: the cause of stress has not gone anywhere, and you will have to return to it. But the nervous system becomes weaker with each cigarette - not stress leads to smoking, but smoking leads to stress. This is why, according to the results of numerous studies, smokers are more prone to stress than free people.

Alexander Fomin:

- One of the most popular arguments for smoking is the belief that it relieves stress.This is impossible even in theory, since nicotine literally kills nerves, because it is a poisonous substance. On the other hand, the powerful poisoning that tobacco smoke creates also fails to promote calmness and relaxation.

Reason four: a cigarette helps you concentrate

Andrey Senchukov:

- First, this statement contradicts the previous one. And secondly, they are both false. There is a phraseological unit “to cloud consciousness”. He practically literally describes the effects of a cigarette on a person. After a smoke break, concentration, attention, reaction speed, energy level, even visual acuity, and so on, instantly drop. One of the reasons for this is vasoconstriction and insufficient oxygen supply. Moreover, instead of oxygen, poisonous smoke enters the body, including the brain. When the situation becomes critical, the brain triggers a defense mechanism, and we begin to feel sleepy, yawning appears. What kind of concentration can we generally talk about here?

Alexander Fomin:

- Cigarette smoke contains combustion products and many toxic substances that interfere with concentration and reduce performance. First, the brain does not receive enough oxygen and nutrients. Secondly, a smoker has to constantly think about taking another smoke break.

Reason five: a cigarette helps to drown out mental anguish

Andrey Senchukov:

- Probably, this is the only statement on the list with which I am ready to partly agree. Cigarettes are able to drown out mental suffering for a while, and with them the voice of reason and conscience. In much the same way as alcohol does. - Mental suffering, like stress, cannot be drowned out by a cigarette, since nicotine is not a psychotropic drug and cannot in any way affect the state of mind. He is not able to make a sad evening joyful and bright. On the contrary, the chronic poisoning experienced by a smoker provokes apathy and loss of strength, deprives of mood. While we are young and healthy, the cumulative effect is not very worrisome, but over the years, smokers notice it. In any case, nicotine gradually destroys the nervous system and creates chronic stress.

Reason six: a cigarette makes you look cool / cocky / pretty / masculine

Andrey Senchukov:

- Fortunately, today the trend is changing: smoking is no longer cool, cool not to smoke! A healthy lifestyle is becoming more and more attractive. Sports, to which more and more young people are joining, is incompatible with smoking. Feminine beauty, natural and attractive to men, is incompatible with smoking. Personal and professional development is incompatible with smoking. Even the heroes of the cinema, flaunting on the screen with a cigarette in their teeth, one after another declare that they lead a healthy lifestyle, and in the frame they smoke only for impressive fees. The writers and directors admitted that almost every cigarette filmed on camera was paid for by the tobacco companies.

Alexander Fomin:

- Perhaps, when we are young, health does not bother, as well as the smell of cigarettes; perhaps we think smoking is cool or stylish. But over the years, when a cigarette becomes something commonplace from morning to evening, people begin to realize that smoking is no longer cool. To be sure of this, it makes sense to ask non-smoking friends if they envy smokers and find daily inhalation of poisoned smoke cool or stylish.

Reason seven: I'm just having fun

Andrey Senchukov:

- Most often, these words hide one of the reasons already voiced above: taste, ritual, stress relief and others. Even if we forget about all the toxic substances and carcinogens contained in tobacco smoke, the maximum good that a smoker can get from a cigarette is a temporary relief: he wanted to smoke - he smoked. It is addiction. And each new cigarette only intensifies and prolongs this addiction. The only way out is to figure out what smoking really is, what consequences it has, who needs us to smoke at all. If you answer these questions correctly, then there will be no reason to smoke.

Alexander Fomin:

- It doesn't matter what arguments the smoker makes, whether it's the taste or smell of cigarette smoke, the “amazing” smoking ritual, or the stress relief attributed to the cigarette. Every time a smoker takes a puff, he feels his need, which nicotine has created, is being satisfied. Smokers mistakenly consider the satisfaction of the desire to smoke a cigarette a pleasure. But this is not the case. Pleasure is the kind of thing people are willing to pay money for their whole life, whether it's travel or delicious food. Pleasure - those things that all life can deliver real emotions or sensations that do not make you worry, even if your own child does it. It is for this reason that the thought that our children will smoke is intimidating, and no sane parent would approve of smoking. Over the years at the Allen Carr Center, I have heard many amazing excuses for allowing you to continue smoking. The reasons for all of them are the fear that any addiction creates. Of course, it is difficult in a nutshell to dispel the fears of smokers in one article, because sometimes several hours are not enough to explain one simple thing: smoking is not only harmful, but completely useless.

The answers of our experts leave no doubt that all excuses of smokers are self-deception, and the real reason for smoking is tobacco addiction. If you are trying to quit smoking, first of all, be honest with yourself: the cigarette does not give you any benefits. Understand that you are only breathing acrid smoke that is destroying your body. It is impossible to quit smoking if cigarettes remain coveted for you.
