Against the background of the coronavirus pandemic, various schemes for combating COVID-19 began to appear on the network, but it is extremely dangerous to follow them and self-medicate, Russian doctors recalled in an interview with journalists from the BBC Russian Service.
Ilya Akinfiev, candidate of medical sciences, infectious disease doctor of the "covid" brigade of the Moscow 175th polyclinic, explained that the algorithms for treating a new infection posted on the Internet may be outdated. The physician noted that COVID-19 is a poorly understood disease, and the means to combat it are constantly being improved. “Therefore, even using a real recommendation, it is possible [in fact] to act according to the old and ineffective scheme,” he said.
The doctor stressed that the surge in attempts to cope with the disease on their own leads only to the fact that those in need of certain drugs cannot find them in pharmacies, because others buy drugs "just in case." Akinfiev added that dietary supplements and traditional medicine often appear in the COVID-19 treatment regimens from the network, which in no way affect the course of the disease.
Lilit Arakelyan, an infectious disease doctor at the Moscow hospital 40 in Kommunarka, agreed with her colleague and noted that the doctor selects the treatment regimen individually, taking into account the characteristics of the patient's body. The specialist recalled that doctors know about the benefits and harms of drugs in different dosages. “People who decide to prescribe drugs for themselves often don't even know what to treat for,” she said.
Arakelyan also drew attention to the fact that there is now a seasonal rise in the incidence of ARVI, influenza and other viral infections, and the temperature does not always indicate the presence of coronavirus. She emphasized that the wrong treatment of the disease can harm the body.
Earlier, the operational headquarters for the control and fight against the spread of infection reported that in Russia over the past day, 22,702 new cases of coronavirus infection were detected in 85 regions - this is a new record for a daily increase since the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, most of all new cases were registered in Moscow (6627), St. Petersburg (1852) and the Moscow region (786).
