Proctologist, oncologist, surgeon Elena Smirnova named the main causes of intestinal atony, which, in turn, is a common cause of chronic constipation.

The expert explained that with atony, the intestinal muscles do not work well, as a result of which food is digested slowly. Stool stagnation leads to fermentation and increased gas production.

Due to irritation of the mucous membrane and the activity of bacteria, inflammation occurs. The state of health worsens, irritability appears, skin problems.

One of the causes of intestinal atony is physical inactivity. Lack of physical activity leads to disruption of blood supply and transmission of nerve impulses to the intestinal walls. As a result, strength decreases and the number of peristaltic movements decreases.

The intestinal muscles are weakened by unhealthy diet - a large amount of carbohydrates and inadequate fiber intake. The provoking factors also include chronic stress, smoking and alcohol consumption, pregnancy, old age, menopause.

Atony is promoted by taking certain medications: antispasmodics, antidepressants, morphine-like analgesics, antiepileptic and antiulcer drugs.

Intestinal infections, dysbiosis, helminths, atherosclerosis of the intestinal arteries, as well as oncology often become the cause of "lazy" intestines.

“It is useless to do enemas, drink laxatives,” warns the proctologist. "They are temporary and addictive."

If you have problems with the intestines, you must undergo an examination. It includes a clinical and biochemical blood test, a blood test for the level of thyroid hormones, a coprogram, an analysis of feces for helminth eggs.

To assess the function of the small intestine, an x-ray of the barium passage will be required. To exclude organic causes of lesions of the large intestine, an irrigoscopy, colonoscopy and biopsy with further histological examination are prescribed.
