Protesters blocked traffic in the city center.
In Warsaw, several thousand people rallied against the tightening of the abortion law. The protest action was organized by the Women's Strike (Strajk Kobiet) movement. The protesters "renamed" Dmowski Square to Women's Rights Square, replacing the corresponding signs.
Police forces arrived at the place of the rally. According to RIA Novosti, the rally is being held peacefully - the police are trying to block the movement of the protesters, but to no avail. The participants of the march advanced to the Liberator Square and Constitution Square.
The rally was reportedly organized after a group of MPs initiated tougher abortion laws. In Poland, abortion has been banned since 1993 - except in cases where pregnancy threatens the life or health of a woman, when an incurable disease is detected in the fetus, or if the pregnancy is the result of a crime. Amendments to the legislation presuppose the prohibition of abortion in case of fetal development disorders.
