MOSCOW, November 29 - PRIME. Patients with coronavirus should never stay at home if they develop bilateral lung damage, pulmonologist Anna Vlasova told Vechernyaya Moskva.
According to her, unilateral pneumonia can be treated at home, but under the very watchful eye of the outpatient service, but when it becomes bilateral, hospitalization is necessary.
"Because acute respiratory distress syndrome, which can develop due to bilateral damage, requires urgent measures, so in this case, you cannot do without the help of doctors," the doctor explained.
Vlasova said that such a syndrome can develop in just a few minutes, and a person will need a connection to a ventilator and resuscitation treatment. "Especially the sixth-eighth days are the most dangerous in terms of the cytokine storm, the period when most patients die due to untimely access to doctors," she said.
Vlasova said that covid pneumonia affects the interstitial tissue in the lungs, which causes the development of shortness of breath quickly enough, with lightning speed. However, this does not occur in all patients. Therefore, one of the best diagnostic methods to identify the disease is considered to be the determination of blood saturation, that is, its oxygen saturation.
Normal rates range from 95 to 98 percent. If less than these figures, then this is a reason to sound the alarm and call an ambulance, since a decrease in the indicator by five positions is a sign of hypoxia and a clear disruption of lung function, the doctor said.
