Scientists continue to investigate cases of asymptomatic coronavirus disease, the Izvestia newspaper reports. Many researchers suggest that this condition is associated with the effective functioning of the immune system. However, some believe that this is due to such a phenomenon as the body's tolerance to disease. With him, according to scientists, the immune system perceives someone else's antigen as its own and does not try to reject it. Therefore, the person does not develop symptoms, the body does not fight the disease. In Beijing, they described the cases of three patients who had coronavirus, but were asymptomatic. They were reported to be elderly and also had chronic illnesses. At the same time, the body did not show any signs of fighting the disease, and COVID-19 persisted for a long time (they were sick for at least 50 days). Andrei Vasin, director of the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Biotechnology, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, noted that tolerance to disease is one of two strategies for dealing with a pathogen. He stressed that the other meant getting rid of him quickly. According to Vasin, these strategies can conflict with each other. "For example, when trying to get rid of a pathogen, the immune response causes more harm to the body than the pathogen itself. On the other hand, anti-inflammatory reactions aimed at developing tolerance to infection can lead to suppression of immunity and the inability of the body to resist infection," Vasin said. He added that a delicate balance between these two strategies ensures that the organism is successfully confronted with disease. At the same time, the infectious disease doctor Elena Belova said that the asymptomatic course of the disease indicates a biological balance. "The host's organism is unable to remove the parasite, and the parasite is not able to overcome the body's defenses and cause illness. Under the action of the body's defenses, the pathogen sooner or later dies, the carriage stops," Belova said. In addition, scientists have discovered a genetic phenomenon of resistance to the coronavirus. They noted that certain mutations prevent a person from contracting COVID-19. These are changes in the ACE2 protein, with the help of which the coronavirus enters the cells of the respiratory tract. It is reported that in the case of mutations, complete immunity to the pathogen may appear, in which there will not even be an asymptomatic course of the disease. Earlier, Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, noted that a decline in the incidence of coronavirus could occur in February - March 2021. He stressed that the stabilization of the current process of infection is expected in the first decade of November.
