Smoking and drinking alcohol are painfully familiar bad habits that doctors advise to quit. Many people believe that sports, proper nutrition and healthy sleep will increase life expectancy. However, scientists at the University of Guangzhou decided to find out whether these "good" habits are really so harmless and whether, on the contrary, they can harm the body.

“It is widely believed that naps improve performance and counteract the negative effects of sleep deprivation. Our research challenges these widely held beliefs,”reads a paper presented at a digital conference of the European Society of Cardiology.

313 thousand people took part in the study. Scientists have observed how the duration of daytime and nighttime sleep affects human health. They found that those who take a nap during the day "for an hour" are 34% more at risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those who do not rest during the day.

"According to the results, shorter sleep (especially less than 30-45 minutes) can improve heart health in people who sleep poorly at night," - said one of the authors of the study, Dr. Zhe Pan, quoted by Fox News.

That said, he added that previous research suggests that prolonged sleep causes premature death and heart disease. In addition, problems with blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as general physical condition, can be a consequence of daytime sleep.
