How porn addiction is explained by brain biochemistry

Porn addiction develops due to the production of dopamine. It is this neurotransmitter that is responsible for feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. It is produced during a wide variety of activities, including during sex and watching porn.

However, the frequent stimulation of dopamine production by viewing "adult materials" causes the destabilization of brain activity. Addiction develops, the same as with drug addiction or alcoholism.

As with drug addiction and alcoholism, in porn addiction, to develop the same amount of "pleasure hormone", it is necessary to constantly "increase the dose." Look for new videos, more and more hard and perverse options for sex, watch them more often.

In extreme stages, this occupation subjugates most of your life. Nights and days on porn sites, paid subscriptions, trying to watch videos in completely inappropriate and crowded places …

Most often, addiction is noted in young men 18-24 years old: every fifth person watches videos at least once a day. But it can occur in adolescents, older men, and, of course, women.

An estimated 72 million people worldwide view pornography every month.

One in ten adults admits they are addicted to porn. A third of this number are women.

70% watch porn videos alone and keep it a secret.

Although doctors do not yet attribute pornography addiction to pathologies, they include it in the spectrum of manifestations of compulsive behavior, highlighting the "problematic viewing of Internet pornography."

Seven shades of porn addiction

American psychotherapist Kevin Skinner has been working with families with porn-addicted patients for many years. Based on his extensive experience with such people, he wrote a book on the treatment of pornography addiction. And in addiction itself, he singled out seven stages.

On the first one, a person looks at pornography 1-2 times a year, on the last one, watching porn is the main occupation of the day, and the usual "vanilla" videos are no longer attractive.

If you do not divide addiction into stages, then the problem begins when viewing explicit pictures crowds out other pleasures. A person is drawn to them instead of all those activities that used to bring joy. And you almost always want to watch the "adult video" instead of routine work.

But watch time is not an indicator. There are no “safe” norms for online porn consumption. It does not happen that 2 hours 59 minutes is a healthy viewing format, and from 3 hours already pathology. It all depends not so much on the frequency of viewing or the time on the pornhub, but on the individual psychological effect.

The main criterion is the loss of self-control. If the absence of a new porn video is hard to bear, if you watch the video in places that are not suitable for privacy, this is addiction.

Other symptoms of porn addiction include a decrease in sensitivity to "regular" videos, the need to copy the scenes seen, lying to the environment with promises to quit and subsequent breakdowns, general stress, anxiety attacks, and self-isolation.

Shame and guilt are also frequent companions of addiction, as well as the fear of being caught watching, chatting in a chat room, or calling for sex on the phone.

And one more thing: instead of increasing the activity of your sex life, watching porn decreases it. Finding new content is becoming more important than real bed contacts.

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers confessed to a passion for watching porn that turned into an addiction.

Ways to get rid of pornographic addiction

Getting rid of porn addiction, like most addictions, is not easy. The dopamine "hook" is strong, without viewing a semblance of "withdrawal" occurs, the treatment process is accompanied by constant breakdowns. But anything is possible.

Comedian Chris Rock and former footballer, Brooklyn 9-9 actor Terry Crews admitted that they have gone through a course of therapy for porn addiction.

Therapies are similar to the 12 Step programs for overcoming alcohol and drug cravings. Despite the prevalence of the problem, individual groups are still rare - they are more often combined with people who are addicted to sex.

Content filters also help: they block pages with trigger banners that can cause a breakdown. Drug therapy is still not particularly successful, although 10 years ago it was reported that antidepressants and stimulants of dopamine secretion are the basis for getting rid of addiction.

Porn addiction is a diagnosis that is usually made on their own, and then they also try to fight it on their own. But not all porn addicts assess themselves correctly.

Conversely, in some cases, the craving for adult material is overestimated. Usually a psychiatrist helps to understand the situation.

Choose those who are actively working with this or any other addiction associated with the production of dopamine.

A doctor who works with alcoholics, drug addicts, sex addicts, kleptomaniacs, etc., not only fully understands the reasons, but also has more tools for working with addicted people.

During the recovery from addiction, the first two months are considered the most difficult, and if after two years a person does not return to watching porn, we can talk about recovery.

Even if there is a breakdown, followed by another one - this is not a reason to stop fighting, you need to try again. If you manage to abstain even for a short time, this is already the first step to healing.
