The chief freelance endocrinologist of the Moscow Department of Health, Mikhail Antsiferov, advised patients with diabetes mellitus to protect themselves from coronavirus infection by being vaccinated. His appeal is given in the Telegram channel of the capital's headquarters.

According to Antsiferov, Russians with such a diagnosis find it more difficult to tolerate many diseases, because they have a higher risk of a severe course of COVID-19. “Blood sugar may rise and a coma may develop,” the doctor warned.

He stressed that such an outcome can be avoided by getting vaccinated against infection. At the same time, the specialist claims that the resulting vaccine will not affect the development of diabetes and will not worsen the course of the disease in the future.

Earlier, an international group of scientists explained the danger of diabetes for those infected with the coronavirus. Due to the increased level of glucose in the blood, a cytokine storm can occur - a chain reaction that leads to the destruction of both the tissues affected by the pathogen and neighboring ones. As a result, the entire body is covered by inflammatory processes that threaten multiple organ failure and death.
